About Buenas Olas Surf: Our Mission & Heritage
Located at Moonlight Beach, Encinitas, we are a premier surf school in North County San Diego. Whilst our focus is to provide top quality surf instruction, our goal is to make the experience of surfing positive, safe and fun for all. We want to send each surf student home with a smile on their face and stoke in their heart.
A Professional Path to Progression
We take a very professional approach to progressing our students in their surf lessons. Whether in an individual surf lesson, a group surf lesson or a surf camp, we provide levels and benchmarks for each surfer. This is so they will have a clear idea of where they are and exactly what they are working to achieve. Progressing up through each level provides motivation and clear goals, so that each student can easily see their improvement with us.
Honoring Culture Through Multilingual Instruction
“Buenas Olas” is Spanish for “Good Waves.” We honor our local California heritage by encouraging diversity and breaking down communication barriers.
Multilingual Excellence: We proudly offer lessons in English and Spanish.
Global Accessibility: To ensure every student feels welcome, we also offer classes in Portuguese, German, and Sign Language (available per request, depending on availability). Through community outreach programs, surf clubs, and camps, we provide a safe, non-threatening environment where individuals from any background or culture can thrive.

In our eyes, age, size, gender, race, religion, or ability shouldn’t define anyone's chance to get on a board and catch a wave. We take pride in protecting our students by understanding their unique needs and teaching them the proper etiquette for the lineup
Meet Cruz & Our International Team
Cruz is a dynamic, hard-charging surfer with a deep passion for the ocean and a dedication to sharing the surfing lifestyle. For many years, Cruz has been one of the top surf instructors in North County San Diego, mentoring students of all ages. Growing up as a local surfer from Del Mar to Oceanside, Cruz was mentored by Southern California surfing legends.
Cruz has led a rich ocean life including surfboard shaping, global exploration, and professional guiding. He is joined by an international team of instructors from all around the world, primarily from Latin America: Mexico, Peru, Argentina, and Brazil. This global expertise allows us to provide a world-class experience right here in Encinitas.
Safety is our priority: All instructors are CPR certified and trained in advanced ocean safety.
